How The Conscious Touch Teams Program Works

Safe. Structured. Consent-based.

Conscious Touch is…

A trained volunteer program serving individuals in long-term care and hospice through supportive, non-clinical touch.

Each visit is guided by clear boundaries, professional oversight, and the expressed comfort of both recipient and volunteer.

This is not massage therapy or counseling.
It is structured, respectful human connection.

“It makes me feel more like I belong than not.”

-Susan, recipient

What happens during a visit…

Each visit follows a consistent structure to ensure safety, clarity, and respect.

01.

Arrival & Coordination

Volunteers meet with staff and confirm which residents have expressed interest in a visit.

02.

Consent First

Touch is never assumed. Every interaction begins with a clear invitation and choice.

03.

Human Connection

Volunteers offer supportive presence — simple hand-holding or companionship based on what feels comfortable for recipient and volunteer.

04.

Thoughtful Close

Visits end gently, with appreciation to the recipient. Volunteer teams always
follow-up with staff.

Safety is foundational to the Conscious Touch model. Every visit begins with explicit invitation and choice. Residents determine their level of comfort, and touch is never assumed.

Volunteers are trained in consent-based presence, clear physical and emotional boundaries, and trauma-informed communication.

The program operates within facility protocols and remains in active communication with staff. Volunteers are also background checked, TB tested, and fingerprinted before ever visiting a recipient.

Leadership provides oversight and screening to ensure every visit aligns with care plans and institutional standards.

How We Ensure
Safety & Quality

“It’s so wonderful to have someone get how you feel…
to touch your hand or shoulder. It’s just so lovely.”
