The Spirit Behind Conscious Touch
Inspired by St. Damien of Molokai
Conscious Touch Teams was founded in 2024, inspired by the life and work of St. Damien of Molokai.
Between 1873 and 1889, he chose to live among those exiled with Hansen’s disease (formerly known as leprosy)—offering care, presence, and human touch when others kept their distance.
In 1873, St. Damien arrived in the exiled settlement of Kalawao on Molokai to serve those living with Hansen’s disease.
At a time when others kept their distance out of fear, he chose something different—radical solidarity. He lived among them, ate beside them, dressed their wounds, and offered physical touch when it was most avoided.
These people were not outcasts to be feared or pitied from a distance, but human beings worthy of care, dignity, and connection.
His life challenged the instinct to withdraw—
and replaced it with the courage to stay.
Through his actions, he made something unmistakably clear:
This spirit lives on through Conscious Touch Teams.
While the context has changed, the need has not.
Many people in long-term care settings still experience profound isolation—often going days, weeks, or longer without meaningful human touch.
Our work continues this legacy in a modern context:
offering presence, connection, and consent-based touch to those who need it most.
Not as a charity, but as a recognition of shared humanity.
